Welcome to our new blog site for the Happy Family Campers. We are a family of four - myself (Mom - Gina), my Husband (Dad - Mark), our 2-year-old (Nate), and our 6-week-old (Matt) - who live in southeast Iowa and love to camp. We recently traded in our travel trailer for a Class C 2003 Winnebago Minni Winni. We are "weekenders" in the world of RV camping.
This first post is about our first outing in our new rig. We decided at the last minute to camp this weekend at Scott County Park near Davenport, Iowa. It was a short drive and a fantastic spot to spend our first weekend in our new-to-us camper.
We were lucky enough to get to the park in time to get a spot a the newer Bald Eagle campground and to get full hookups. That gave us the opportunity to test out everything with the plumbing and electrical components in the Winni and we are very happy with the rig. We had beautiful weather during the day, but the nights were colder than we expected. But that did give us a chance to also test the air conditioning and furnace. Thankfully both work wonderfully.
This was the first time we have taken Matt out camping. At only 6 weeks of age, he did wonderfully. We were able to keep his milk in the fridge nice and cold and then warm them in a timely manner. We don't put his bottles in the microwave in the Minni, but I have found heating water in the microwave for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes and then putting his bottle in that water heats the bottles quickly, and everyone is happy. He slept wonderfully in his "pack and play" that fit nicely between the couch and dinette. That also served as a guard to keep his big brother out of the cab area that he is learning is not a play area.
Big brother Nate did fantastic. This was not his first outing, as he had his first camping trip at 8 weeks in our old travel trailer. However, this is the first time Nate has been super excited to go on a trip. He had ample opportunity to play at the playground at the campground and the camping spots were very large and gave him plenty of room to blow bubbles, chase bugs, and generally have a great time as a two-year-old.
We had friends meet us for dinner at our site. Due to the large sites, the extra people did not prove to be a burden to other campers and we all had plenty of room to move around and enjoy ourselves. The kids also had a great time in the grassy area behind our site.
Overall, our journey to Scott County Park this weekend was a blast and we will definitely be heading back there many times this summer and for years to come. In addition to the campground we were in, there are a few others with electric and water hookups or no hookups for those who really wish to rough-it. There also is a pool in the park, a lake for fishing, and miles of trails for biking and hiking. I highly recommend checking out the park if you are in the area.
Happy Camping!
